How to Shield (Protect) Your Kerrigan Funds

Kerrigan supports shielded (protected) transactions using Sapling. A shielded address starts with ks1…. Shielding works on the network today; the wallet just doesn't have a "Shield" button yet, so here's how to do it by hand.

Step 1 — Make a shielded address

In the full-node (Qt) wallet, open the console (Window → Console, or Help → Debug window → Console) and run:

z_getnewaddress

It prints a new ks1… address. Copy it.

Step 2 — Send to it from the normal Send screen

Go to the wallet's normal Send screen and paste your ks1… address as the recipient. When the destination is a shielded address, the wallet builds it as a shielded send automatically. Enter the amount and send.

Step 3 — If it says "insufficient transparent funds" with a full wallet

This is the most common snag, and it's not a bug. A shield spends coins from one address at a time, but the balance you see is your whole wallet added up, so a single address can be short while your total looks fine.

Gather your coins into one address first:

sendtoaddress "K<your-own-transparent-address>" <total-amount>

Wait for one confirmation, then shield from that address:

z_sendmany "K<that-funded-address>" "[{\"address\":\"ks1<your-shielded-address>\",\"amount\":10.0}]"

Leave a little behind for the fee. Check progress with z_getoperationstatus; when it reports success, your funds are shielded.

Using the web wallet

If you're shielding in the browser wallet and hit an error, use the full-node method above for now. If it keeps failing, post the exact error text in #support (a browser-console screenshot helps) so we can fix your specific case.

To spend shielded funds back out, send from your ks1… address to a normal K… address the same way.
